Food for Thought

At our awareness info desk at events, we have provided some inspiration for you to reflect on. For example, privilege checks, which you can find under the ‘Resources’ tab. You can recognise our table by a large glowing heart and glowing epoxy resin letters, all of which have a special meaning.
A large purple heart cast from epoxy resin. The heart is held up by a blue pedestal with little ducks on the pond. A turquoise Fairy Dust Rocket flies past the heart, pulling a glittery bandage over it.

Chaos is more than computers and soldering irons. Chaos is also the aspiration to be an ‘intergalactic community of living beings’. That is why we must also address transgressions, sexualised violence, abuse of power, various forms of discrimination, exclusion and barriers. And, of course, do something about them.

Awareness in Germany is closely linked to the feminist movement. Therefore, dealing with harassment, boundary violations and sexualised violence is a core issue of awareness. But everyday things such as toilets and available menstrual products must also be considered at an event. You can find out more about the history at the: Awareness Institute.

Have you heard of the Gender Unicorn? Gender and sexuality are diverse, they can change over the course of a lifetime, and they are multidimensional. The Gender Unicorn illustrates this. There are many queer people out there in the Chaos. That's why it's important for dya cis heterosexual people to engage with this issue and be sensitive to queer realities, needs, and vulnerabilities.

CW Right-wing violence Struggles for emancipation and against discrimination and exploitation are being fought against by the far right. Especially in times of authoritarianism and the courting of misanthropy and fascism, it remains important to take a stand, to be loud and show solidarity with those who are directly affected. Despite all current challenges, we must not forget the many victims (including those who have lost their lives) of right-wing violence and terror: https://chaos.social/@keinvergessen@bildung.social

Like sexism and queerphobia, racism and anti-Semitism are also social power relations. The consequences of these are very different: people are restricted, disadvantaged, injured or killed. Our orange A refers to police violence and a deadly migration regime, but also stands for countless racist and anti-Semitic everyday experiences. Awareness involves addressing the various forms of discrimination. We have all internalised discriminatory images and narratives, regardless of whether we belong to the discriminated or privileged group. Even in times of chaos, we must be aware of how racism and anti-Semitism affect people and take action wherever discrimination occurs.

Disability is far too little discussed in society and at Chaos events. Even at Chaos events there are (still) far too many barriers for people with disabilities or limited mobility. @c3tactile started at 38C3 with tactile signage, floor plans and a guidance system. Thank you <3 And let's create even more of this! Pro tip for non-disabled people: unsolicited help is patronising and intrusive. Consideration is great.
An 'R' made of epoxy resin. Inside, fairy lights glow, there's a Lego figure in a wheelchair, white Braille keyboard keycaps, and a Lego figure with a white cane and some sunglasses float around inside. The letter is coloured yellow.

Awareness also means learning from and with each other and creating opportunities for learning and exchange. At #39C3, we are planning a workshop to present our work. Two of our team members have submitted this workshop (in German): 'Wie spreche ich IHN an? Mit anderen Männern über Sexismus, Grenzüberschreitung und sexualisierte/ Partnerschafts-Gewalt reden' If you are interested in an awareness workshop at your hackspace or similar, please get in touch with us!

Not all disabilities are visible. And assistive devices may not always be necessary. But barriers still exist... For concerns about barriers at congress, you can contact the accessibility team, which will provide support where it can. And there is c3auti, which you can contact if you have any questions about neurodiversity. You can also use the QuietCube if you need some peace and quiet, even if you are not neurodivergent. And did you know that the sunflower is a symbol for invisible disabilities?
